A few travel ideas for La Rochelle and Connacht
For those of you who are still undecided as to whether you will be going to the European games in La Rochelle, or are not sure of travel options, here are a few ideas. Please note that we are not a travel agency and all routes will need to be verified!
LA ROCHELLE: Thursday 4th December.
BY AIR: It seems that Ryanair will be the most popular route because they fly directly into La Rochelle from Stansted. However, the flight is at 2.05 pm so you won’t have to leave home in the middle of the night or stay the night before at the airport. This flight was £44 return but it is doubtful whether it will stay at that price for long. Alternatively, Easyjet fly to Nantes, for £63 return at the moment. La Rochelle, is approx 90 minutes driving time from Nantes. There are also regular trains, about 90 minutes and depending on time of journey and whether you have a rail card etc, it could be anything between £30 and £70 return.
BY RAIL: This is where fares can be really complicated. If you have any type of railcard, that will make a big difference to the fare. Also, at the time of writing, the December fares are not published. We did do a couple of comparisons, and the rail journeys were more expensive but it is a very relaxing way to travel. www.voyages-sncf.com is a very good rail site.
FERRY: Plymouth-Roscoff www.Brittany-Ferries.co.uk gives the shortest driving time this side. Based on a car with 4 passengers, leaving on Friday and returning on Sunday, with fare would be £378 but that does not include a cabin/reclining seat, although they are not always required. Taking the same ferry and driving to La Rochelle would be about 5 hours. You can also sail from Poole/Portsmouth to Caen, the driving times on the French side being about the same.
ACCOMODATION: Plenty of options to choose from. For hotels and apartments, a popular website is www.booking.com to start with as is Tripadvisor. Also, www.airbnb.co.uk gives worldwide flats, apartments and bed and breakfast listings.
Don't forget there is a ferry/coach option see COACH TRAVEL TO LA ROCHELLE

A few travel ideas for our trip to Galway
Many of you have booked your travel to Galway already but for those of you who haven’t made a decision yet, these are just a few ideas. Please note that these prices are at the time of writing this. Some of you may have paid less and some of you will probably pay more nearer the confirmed fixture date. These notes are here for you to browse – I’m not a travel agent or advisor!
BY AIR to Dublin
From EXETER with FLYBE approx £90 return
From BRISTOL with Ryanair as little as £35 return; with Aer Lingus approx £70 return
From BIRMINGHAM with Ryanair less than £20 return; with Aer Lingus approx £40 return
BY AIR: to Shannon
From BRISTOL with Aer Lingus £80 return
From STANSTED with Ryanair approx £20 return
From LONDON GATWICK with Ryanair approx £20 return.
I’ve looked at the ferry crossings with car and 2 passengers and they seem to be about £230 return but have not explored this option very thoroughly! Sorry!
TRANSPORT FROM DUBLIN TO GALWAY:
Three options here: 1) Hire car, either from Dublin Airport or from Dublin city. The M6 is a toll road, approx £1.50 toll and will take approximately 2 hours driving.
2) Bus To Galway: Gobus, Busbud, Citylink are all coach companies who offer very frequent services to Galway from Dublin airport and the city. The buses run from VERY early morning until VERY late at night and the journey takes between 2.45 hours and 3 hours. Bookings can be made on-line and the return trip works out at about £21.
3) By rail, the trip takes between 2.5 hours and 4 hours depending on which journey you make. I did not take down the fares, too variable.
TRANSPORT FROM SHANNON TO GALWAY:
1) By car from Shannon to Galway is about 50 miles
2) By bus: Buseirann takes about 2 hours from the airport to Galway and is about £17.00 return. Tickets can be booked online. The nearest RAIL service is about 9 miles from the airport.
Booking.com is a good starting point for hotels. ENJOY YOUR TRIP AND THE GAME.
